Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina
It is important to read God’s Word, but it is also important to meditate, reflect, and listen to God’s Word. The ancient practice of Lectio Divina is a beautiful method of reading God’s Word with our ears and meditating deeply on what God is speaking to us through it. Below is an explanation to guide you through the process.
Lectio Divina: A Sacred Way to Meditate on Scripture
Lectio Divina, meaning “sacred reading,” is a traditional practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer intended to promote communion with God. It’s a beautiful way to engage with the Bible and allow its words to transform you.
Here are the five steps of Lectio Divina:
1. Prepare (Silencio)
Begin by quieting your mind and heart. Consciously place yourself in the presence of God, offering yourself fully to Him. This step is about creating an inner space for divine encounter.
2. Read (Lectio)
Read the chosen scripture passage aloud, slowly. Allow the words to resonate and settle in your heart. After a brief pause, reread the passage aloud. During these first two readings, pay close attention to any word or phrase that catches your attention or “lights up” for you.
3. Reflect (Meditatio)
Now, take time to sit with the word or phrase that stood out. Reread the passage quietly to yourself. Consider how this word or phrase connects with your life right now. You might also enter into the scene of the Scripture in your imagination. Watch the people, listen to their interactions, and notice what you hear and experience as you observe.
4. Pray (Oratio)
Speak to God about the word or phrase He has highlighted and what emotions or thoughts are arising within you. Journaling can be a helpful tool in this step. Reflect on how God has addressed you through His Word and how He is inviting you to respond. Allow the Scripture to lead you into a prayerful response.
5. Rest (Contemplatio)
Finally, rest in God’s presence. Deeply receive God’s Word and simply be in His presence and love. Give yourself ample time to wait and be still before re-entering your daily life. Carry God’s Word with you throughout the day, returning to it and remembering it. Stay with God until you feel gently prompted to conclude your time of prayer.
